Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members can now redeem miles for award flights combining American Airlines and British Airways, allowing a single redemption. Previously, the plan only allowed combinations when one airline was Alaska Airlines.

According to Upgraded Points, the new option is limited to these two airlines. The change does not extend to other partners like Cathay Pacific or Japan Airlines unless Alaska is involved.

The combined redemptions are priced higher than those with a single partner. For instance, flying solely with British Airways from Miami to Frankfurt is cheaper than combining it with American Airlines. This pricing structure results from separate award pricing that combines costs.

Despite higher costs, benefits include smoother journeys when changing planes at airports like London's Heathrow. Baggage is checked through to the final destination, and passengers are protected against delays affecting connecting flights.

The Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan has improved by permitting bookings with two partners as a single award. Currently, this includes only American Airlines and British Airways, but more partners may be added in the future.

Members save miles by sticking with one partner for an entire journey due to separate pricing of multicarrier awards. However, booking both airlines together offers a seamless travel experience if availability with a single carrier is lacking.
