New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a $150 million state investment to expand and upgrade MacArthur Airport, aiming to boost regional economic growth. She made the announcement in a press release on February 14.

"Airports like MacArthur are the ‘doormat to the rest of the world," said Hochul. "Airport Investment Will Drive Economic Growth."

According to Hochul, the $150 million state investment will support Suffolk County’s expansion and rehabilitation of MacArthur Airport. Speaking at the airport’s baggage terminal on February 14, she emphasized that the funding would improve infrastructure and stimulate economic growth in the region.

The investment will facilitate the purchase of a 48-acre parcel, the construction of a pedestrian pathway to the Ronkonkoma Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) station, and other essential infrastructure upgrades. Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine confirmed that the county will contribute at least $50 million to further develop the project, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the airport’s growth, according to the New York Post.

MacArthur Airport, which serves approximately 1.6 million passengers annually, is owned and operated by the Town of Islip. Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter said the project has the potential to create high-quality jobs and new opportunities for young professionals in the area. The improvements align with ongoing efforts to enhance transit connectivity and economic stability in Suffolk County.

The Long Island Rail Road is expected to play a significant role in improving airport accessibility. LIRR President Rob Free said that relocating MacArthur’s terminal closer to Ronkonkoma station will encourage more travelers to use the train, reducing road congestion and enhancing the overall transportation experience.

MacArthur Airport, located in Ronkonkoma, New York, is a public airport owned and operated by the Town of Islip. The airport offers both commercial and general aviation services, providing convenient access to Long Island and the greater New York metropolitan area.
