US Air Force's Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron Fly Away Security Teams | Wikipedia

The US Air Force's Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron Fly Away Security Teams (FAST) play a critical role in providing security for aircraft and personnel operating in areas with uncertain or absent infrastructure and defenses. These teams are essential when missions require transit through austere and hazardous regions, ensuring the safety of aircrews and ground personnel.

FAST teams are not merely passengers; they undergo specialized training to manage threats on the ground. They work with host nation forces and coalition partners to create a seamless defense wherever they land. Their presence helps mitigate risks such as sabotage, theft, or direct attacks, allowing aircrews to perform their duties efficiently.

Senior Airman Vanessa Saenz-Garcia noted, "Some airfield locations are not as fortified, leaving personnel and aircraft vulnerable to attacks. Our job is to provide that layer of protection regardless of the environment to ensure aircrew can do their job and get personnel and resources moved within the theater."

These teams conduct threat assessments, establish protective perimeters, respond to threats, and coordinate with allied security elements. Their role is crucial in maintaining operational momentum for aircraft transporting cargo or evacuating personnel.

In January 2017, during Operation Inherent Resolve, the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing conducted over 600 sorties into challenging locations with FAST support ensuring mission success against threats like those posed by ISIS.

Tech. Sgt. Jessica Cable emphasized their core responsibility: "Once that plane lands, we pop out and provide 360 (degree coverage) because that’s our sole responsibility."

FAST teams exemplify military adaptability by deploying small units with aircraft rather than stationing large security contingents at remote airfields. This approach conserves resources while delivering significant protective advantages.

Lt. Col. Matthew Butler praised his team’s performance during the Afghanistan evacuation: "Their bravery and determination... was critical in ensuring the safety and security of the aircrews, aircraft, and evacuee passengers during the largest humanitarian airlift in history."

Col. Denny Davies highlighted technological advancements: "Our counter UAS program is one of the most impressive I have seen to date."

As global demands grow more complex, FAST remains vital for rapid deployment into unstable zones.
