A FedEx Boeing 767-300F operating a service from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Indianapolis (IND) had to return to its airport of origin after a bird strike. Social media footage shows the aircraft’s engine on fire as it made its way back to Newark. The incident occurred on Saturday morning local time.

In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the incident. The aviation body said:

“FedEx Flight 3609 safely returned to Newark Liberty International Airport around 8 a.m. local time on Saturday, March 1, after striking a bird while departing. The strike damaged one of the Boeing 767’s engines. The flight was headed to Indianapolis. The FAA will investigate. ”

According to social media footage, while airborne, the aircraft let off a flash of fire and smoke following the bird strike. The crew supposedly decided to return to Newark Airport after the incident, landing back at around 08:07 according to FlightRadar24 playback data. The aircraft had taken off from Newark at 07:58 local time, making its way northwards over Newark before turning back round given the incident. The Boeing 767 both took off and landed back on runway 22L.

Playback data shows that the plane remained on the ground for just under an hour before being removed from the scene. At the time of publication, the runway is once again operational. The airport operator - the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed this information in a statement sent to Simple Flying:

“At around 8:07 a.m. today, a FedEx cargo plane made an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport following a bird strike. There are no reported injuries. Air traffic was briefly halted as a precaution, but operations have since resumed. ”
