Lufthansa Group’s long-haul leisure carrier, Discover Airlines, has announced new intercontinental flights from Munich, Germany. The additions include connections to Orlando, USA; Calgary, Canada; and Windhoek, Namibia. Flights to Calgary will be replaced with itineraries to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic during the winter months.

In a statement on March 4, Discover Airlines said that it would commence its thrice-weekly flights from Munich Airport (MUC) to Orlando International Airport (MCO) starting March 5. This route is expected to operate year-round.

According to data from aviation analytics company Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning tool, no airline has served the Munich-Orlando route since at least 2000. Meanwhile, OAG Traffic Analyzer data reveals that between August 2023 and July 2024, there were 36,448 point-to-point one-way travelers flying between Orlando and Munich. These passengers were connecting elsewhere to reach the Bavarian airport.

By June 2025, ten airports in Europe will have flights to Orlando. This includes continental airports as well as island nations like Iceland and the United Kingdom. In comparison, seven European airports had direct connections to Orlando by June 2024 according to Cirium’s Diio Mi.

In addition to Discover Airlines’ new route from Munich, Air France and Icelandair will also begin flying to Orlando. Norwegian last flew from Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG) in March 2020 while Icelandair operated its route seasonally.

Discover Airlines also announced flights from Munich to Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) starting April 1 and Calgary International Airport (YYC) beginning April 12. Flights to Windhoek are set for year-round service while those heading towards Calgary will be seasonal.

The German leisure carrier noted that instead of Calgary during winter months they would switch operations towards Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). All these routes - Calgary, Windhoek, and Punta Cana - will depart Munich three times per week.

Air Transat last flew between Munich and Calgary in 2011 while Eurowings operated previous direct connections between Munich and Windhoek in 2018. Discover Airlines itself was the last airline flying from Munich to Punta Cana back in October of '22 when it was still known as Eurowings Discover.

Bernd Baeur CEO of Discover Airlines highlighted their successful first year operating out of their second home base at Frankfurt Airport(FRA). He said: “[…] the booking figures show that this positive development is continuing.”

The airline employs around four hundred people including pilots flight attendants ground support personnel based out of their operations hub at MUC.

This summer season sees eight aircraft being based at MUC including two Airbus A330s along with six Airbus A320s aiming at challenging Condor's dominance over leisure market segments within this region benefiting largely due Lufthansa's feeder network which now includes ITA Airways latest addition into group's fold
