Air China is set to reinstate its Boeing 747-8 service to Washington Dulles, marking a significant development in the dwindling network of this iconic aircraft. This route will become the world's longest 747-operated passenger service by time, although not by distance.

Beginning March 11, China's flag carrier will operate the four-class, 365- seat "Queen of the Skies" to Dulles, replacing the three-class, 311-seat Boeing 777-300ER. This switch represents a 17% increase in available seats per flight and introduces premium economy seating options.

"While the equipment switch means 17% more seats for sale per flight, it is more significant than that," said an industry observer. The new configuration includes 66 premium economy seats and increases first-class and business-class seats to 12 and 54 respectively. Conversely, economy seats will decrease from 261 to 233.

The route will operate nonstop on Tuesdays and Saturdays as follows:

- Beijing Capital to Washington Dulles: CA817, 12:30-15:10 (14h 40m block time)

- Washington Dulles to Beijing Capital: CA818, 17:35-22:30+1 (16h 55m)

This change eliminates the current Los Angeles stopover on return flights and reflects mandatory adjustments for avoiding Russian airspace.

Before the pandemic in 2019, both Air China and United Airlines operated daily flights on this route. United has scheduled a return for October26; however, this remains uncertain.

The longest Boeing747 passenger flights by time from March11 are as follows:

- Beijing Capital to Washington Dulles: Air China747-8(twice-weekly) –16h55m

- Beijing Capital to New York JFK: Air China747-8(five weekly) –16h45m

- Seoul Incheon to Atlanta: Korean Air747-8(daily until March30) –15h50m
