The inaugural IATA World Data Symposium (WDS) brought together industry leaders to explore the roles of data, technology, and cybersecurity in aviation. Hosted in Dublin, the event welcomed over 700 participants.

"The inaugural IATA WDS reinforced the critical role of data, technology, and cybersecurity in shaping the future of aviation. It also clearly demonstrated that by working together across the aviation value chain to share information and modernize standards, we create enormous potential to benefit our customers with even more efficient travel and shipping experiences. This was our first WDS, but with so much potential evolving every day, it will not be our last," said Kim Macaulay, IATA’s Chief Information and Data Officer.

The symposium focused on three main themes:

- Leveraging data for value: Improvements in artificial intelligence (AI) and predictive analytics are expected to enhance efficiency, passenger experience, and sustainability through better utilization of aviation's rich data collection.

- Integrating technology solutions: Innovations such as cloud computing, automation, and digital identity are proving valuable in improving efficiency while reducing costs. The industry aims to modernize standards for a seamless passenger journey from booking to baggage delivery.

- Building cyber resilience: As technology use grows within travel and air cargo value chains, robust cybersecurity measures become increasingly crucial.

IATA unveiled results from three proof-of-concept (PoC) programs:

- Cargo Acceptance Process: This PoC demonstrated how a large language model (LLM) could manage regulatory compliance in air cargo acceptance processes while reducing waste and optimizing cargo space.

- Agency Onboarding: This PoC showed how digital identity could streamline new agent onboarding by automating identity verification processes.

- Passenger Entitlements: This PoC explored using digital identity credentials stored on mobile devices to automate processes like lounge access based on various entitlements.

"From optimizing cargo processes to strengthening identity management and enhancing passenger experience, AI and digital identity are already transforming key processes in aviation," said Macaulay.

The event was preceded by a data hackathon held on February 27, 2025. .
