In recent years, sustainability has become an increasingly important topic for major companies in the aviation industry. Whether they are airlines, manufacturers, or airports, many share a common goal of reducing carbon emissions in the sector, with the aim of becoming net zero by the middle of the century. There are various ways these companies can foster sustainability.

For airports, one approach is to increase their use of renewable energy. This solution has been implemented successfully in some places; for instance, Simple Flying reported as early as 2022 that Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in New Delhi was already running entirely on hydro and solar power. However, solar panels are proving problematic elsewhere.

The presence of solar panels at Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), the largest and busiest airport in the Netherlands, is not a new development. Coverage on this matter dates back at least a decade. In March 2015, NL Times reported that Solar Energy Works had teamed up with Schiphol Area Development and the municipality of Haarlemmermeer to "build the largest solar park in the Netherlands. "

The NL Times noted that "the solar park will consist of 120 thousand solar panels and be about the size of 52 football fields. " While built in conjunction with the airport, this project aimed not to provide renewable energy to Schiphol itself but rather to supply approximately 4,500 households in nearby neighborhoods.

Two years later, in March 2017, area development group SADC announced it had signed an agreement with F&S SOLAR to build the solar park at Groene Hoek in Haarlemmermeer municipality. SADC confirmed that "at a site measuring 26 hectares, the panels will generate around 15 MWh per year... [and] yield a reduction in CO2 emissions of 5,580 MT."

More recently, separate projects have arisen concerning widespread installation of solar panels around Schiphol Airport to generate renewable energy. For instance, NL Times reported in October 2020 that Noord-Holland province and Haarlemmermeer municipality agreed on a "plan to cover a large part of Schiphol Airport in 300 hectares of solar panels. "

This initiative was part of a broader push for regions across the Netherlands to make plans for sustainable energy under a climate agreement, with Noord- Holland alone looking to generate seven terawatt hours from a national total target of thirty-five. Haarlemmermeer was highlighted as an ideal location due to its abundance of unprotected rural areas.

According to NL Times, plans included installing solar panels on airfields as well as roofs of airport buildings and car parks if safe air operations could be guaranteed. Companies involved pledged to consult local residents and municipal councils for support.

Since then, TP Solar announced two initiatives selected by Haarlemmermeer municipal council in 2022 as part of its drive towards being energy neutral by2050.

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport's website provides details about current use: "An increasing number buildings at Schiphol have solar panels...in line with our ambition generate more sustainable energy."

Successes include self-reliant parts like P3 long-stay car park powered entirely by its own roof-mounted six thousand-panel array:

However admirable these efforts may seem there challenges arise particularly springtime when brighter longer days increase potential yet create issues such glare affecting pilot visibility:
