Latin American airline Avianca is expanding its U.S. operations significantly this year, following through on its commitment to add at least five new routes to Florida.

The Star Alliance carrier will commence daily flights between Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport (GUA) and Miami International Airport (MIA) starting May 10. Avianca will operate an Airbus A320 with a capacity of up to 180 seats for this route.

Aviation analytics firm Cirium reports that this route marks Avianca’s fifth connection to the U.S. from Guatemala City and its sixth overall in 2025. Other new routes include Bogota’s El Dorado International Airport (BOG) to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Tampa International Airport (TPA), as well as Medellin’s Jose Maria Cordova International Airport (MDE) to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

The airline, which restructured under Chapter 11 bankruptcy during the pandemic, is experiencing significant growth in the U.S. market. In the first half of the year, scheduled seats are set to increase by nine percent compared to last year, according to Cirium data. This follows a substantial25 percent increase in seats in2024.

Florida plays a pivotal role in Avianca's U.S. expansion strategy. Seats bound for Florida are expected to rise by19 percent year-over-year inthe first half of2025, or about a quarter comparedto2019 levels.

"Florida has historically been a key gateway for connections to Latin America, which is why it is essential for us to contribute toreuniting families, boosting tourism and promoting business," said Avianca CEO Frederico Pedreira in December.

Avianca's rapid expansion into Florida positions it as a contender for becoming the largest foreign airline in the state. The airline aims toreclaim its position as thesecond-largest carrier from LATAM Airlines by thesecond quarter--it had droppedto fifth placein2022 during restructuring--and remains second onlyto Air Canada . While Air Canada holds asignificant lead ,it faces challenges withU .S.travel demandand has indicated plans toreducemarginal schedules .

Avianca also announced potential new services from Augusto Cesar SandinoInternationalAirport(MGA)inManagua,Nicaragua,toFortLauderdalethisyear, but no specific date has been provided yet .
