Delta Air Lines and JetZero have announced a partnership to develop a commercial blended wing airliner, marking a significant shift in aircraft design. While traditional cylindrical fuselages with low-mounted wings have dominated the industry for decades, the new collaboration aims to enhance sustainability through innovative designs.

JetZero, known for its blended-wing-body (BWB) aircraft intended for both commercial and military use, has already partnered with the United States Air Force. The new agreement with Delta Air Lines strengthens its commercial prospects.

According to a statement released by Delta, the airline will support JetZero and the USAF in efforts to launch a full-scale demonstrator aircraft by 2027. Delta's Sustainable Skies Lab will also assist in making the BWB commercially viable and consult on interior design matters. Amelia DeLuca, Delta's Chief Sustainability Officer, said:

"Working with JetZero to realize an entirely new airframe and experience for customers and employees is bold and important work to advance the airline industry’s fuel-saving initiatives and innovation goals. While Delta is focused on doing what we can today to address our carbon footprint, it’s critical we also work with a variety of partners to advance revolutionary technologies, like JetZero’s blended-wing-body aircraft, to solve a significant portion of future aviation emissions. "

The BWB design promises exciting opportunities for passenger experience due to its unique fuselage shape. This allows various configurations of passenger cabins. Delta expects that the JetZero BWB will accommodate over 250 passengers, comparable to current widebody airliners. However, there will be notable changes such as dedicated overhead bin space for each passenger, accessible seats and lavatories, and fewer rows.

Structurally, one major difference is that the BWB's engines are mounted on top at the rear of the aircraft. This configuration is expected to provide a quieter cabin environment compared to existing planes. Additionally, Delta is exploring how BWBs could enable quicker turnarounds using existing airport infrastructure.

The efficient design of the BWB aims at reducing emissions significantly—a key goal as airlines strive towards net-zero targets by 2050. According to Delta "the BWB is up to 50% more fuel efficient than conventional tube-and-wing airframes," thanks to reduced drag and increased lifting surface area.

The propulsion system will feature conventional-looking jet engines located atop the plane's rear section—a choice that simplifies development and certification processes while allowing use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
