Spirit Airlines has announced the launch of the first-ever direct connection between San Antonio and San Juan, Puerto Rico, marking a significant expansion at the Texas airport.

On March 6, Spirit Airlines disclosed that it would initiate San Antonio International Airport’s (SAT) first direct service to the Caribbean since at least 2000. The carrier will operate up to four weekly Airbus A320neo flights to San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU).

According to aviation analytics company Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning tool data, airlines have offered one-stop connections between San Antonio and San Juan and the Caribbean since at least 2000. This includes Southwest Airlines flight WN1685, which operated once per week with a stop at Orlando International Airport (MCO). This service ended in September 2024.

John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning at Spirit Airlines, emphasized the importance of this new service: “We''re always looking to add new, exciting destinations for our guests to visit and explore, and our new service will make it easier for travelers to enjoy a vacation on the Island of Enchantment or the Alamo City. ”

Data from OAG Traffic Analyzer indicates that between August 2023 and July 2024, approximately 32,420 one-way passengers traveled from San Antonio to San Juan despite no direct itineraries being available. These travelers had to make connections elsewhere with carriers like American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, or others.

Jesus Saenz Jr., Director of Airports for the City of San Antonio said: “Establishing nonstop service has been a priority for us at SAT... we are thrilled to celebrate the first nonstop flight here with our partners at Spirit Airlines. ”

Glorianna Yamin, Vice President of Marketing at Discover Puerto Rico added: “And as a U.S. territory, no passport is required for U.S. citizens making it even more convenient to discover Puerto Rico and truly Live Boricua. ”

In March when Spirit Airlines launches its itineraries between San Antonio and San Juan there will be an increase in direct weekly flights including notable departures such as those from Orlando Florida among others.

The expansion also includes another destination - Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) coming online on April9 bringing total destinations served by Spirit out offSanAntonioto nine twoofwhichareseasonalroutesLouisArmstrongNewOrleansInternationalAirportMSYandMiamiInternationalAirportMIA
