On March 7, 2025, an unusual incident occurred on an Iberia flight from Dusseldorf to Madrid Barajas Airport. During the flight, a tarantula was reportedly discovered in the cockpit, leading to the pilot being bitten. It is believed that the spider may have boarded the aircraft during a layover at Casablanca Airport in Morocco. Immediate medical action was taken once the plane landed safely.

Iberia confirmed that despite this incident, "the aircraft continued flying, serving Brussels, Zurich, and Toulouse." All necessary safety protocols were followed by Iberia crew members, including on-ground fumigation and brief grounding of the aircraft to ensure passenger and crew safety.

Upon landing, reports suggest that the pilot received an anti-inflammatory steroid as a preventive measure. There are conflicting reports about whether any adverse reactions occurred; however, after receiving treatment, he resumed his duties without significant delay.

Flying regulations in Spain mandate disinfection procedures if insects or arachnids present risks onboard. As such, complete cabin fumigation was carried out at Madrid Barajas Airport along with thorough checks of overhead lockers, seats, and cockpit areas. These procedures resulted in a three-hour delay but ensured safe continuation of operations.

Recovery for the Iberia pilot was swift and uneventful. According to The Independent , "the pilot is doing fine and carried on with scheduled flights." The New York Post reported that "though it is not clear if further medical attention was required," Iberia Airlines confirmed no lasting health effects.

The same plane resumed normal activities around three hours later following comprehensive safety checks. Investigators believe that luggage from an earlier flight between Madrid and Casablanca might have brought aboard the tarantula.

In other instances worldwide involving unexpected stowaways: In Australia''s Northern Territory Sean Hancock encountered a huntsman spider mid-flight; In another case from New York bound for Belgium involving Air Atlanta Icelandic flight saw a horse escape its stall causing chaos onboard; And finally in South Africa authorities applauded a Beechcraft Baron pilot who managed an inflight situation involving a cape cobra snake.

Aviation history includes numerous cases where animals or insects have been discovered onboard flights unexpectedly leading to immediate detainment and health inspections.
