Israir, motivated by the ceasefire between Israel and Palestine and addressing a capacity gap to New York, has applied to the US Department of Transportation for a foreign air carrier permit. This move follows its late 2024 disclosure of interest in entering the US market. Although Israir does not currently operate widebody aircraft, its application suggests it would use leased Airbus A330 planes.

If granted permission and flights commence, Israir would become the third Israeli passenger airline serving the US, joining El Al and Arkia. Arkia's inaugural US flight took place on February 8, 2025.

The application outlines a proposed six-weekly service from Tel Aviv to Greater New York beginning on July 1 for the peak summer season. Details remain sparse, including which operator will provide the A330-200 aircraft; however, HiFly is considered a potential candidate due to its fleet availability.

The specific airport destination within New York—either JFK or Newark—has not been disclosed. The decision will depend on various factors such as fees and charges, competition levels, slot availability at JFK, congestion at Newark during required timeslots, ground handling agreements, and other logistical considerations. Given that JFK hosts most Tel Aviv flights including Arkia's recent entry some speculate that Israir might favor Newark.

This would mark Israir's second endeavor into the US market; according to DOT records it previously operated flights to JFK until2008 using leased Boeing767-300ERs from Icelandairand anA330-200from Eurofly
