A luxury Miami-area hotel is set to undergo a major renovation this spring, closing its doors for at least six months in the process.

The beachfront Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami will start the renovation process in May when it plans to lay off about 425 hotel employees, according to the Miami Herald, citing a required Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act letter to Florida officials. The closure is expected to last until Dec. 15.

"The renovation project is expected to take at least six months but may last longer," according to the WARN letter.

The 13-story Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami sits on a 5-mile-long barrier island and features multiple restaurants, both adults-only and child-friendly pools, 1,000 feet of pristine beachfront, and access to activities like tennis and golf. The property's rooms and suites boast balconies with ocean, island or resort views, and some include full kitchens and dining spaces perfect for family stays.

The $100 million renovation project will be led by the resort's original developer, Gencom, which retook majority ownership last year. At the time, Gencom said the renovations would include "major upgrades to the guestrooms, food & beverage offerings, public spaces and guest amenities. "

"The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne has become a hospitality anchor for Miami's Village of Key Biscayne since Gencom co-developed the property in 2000 and we are excited to retake control of the asset for a long-term hold," Karim Alibhai, the founder of Gencom, said in a statement last January. "We look forward to achieving the property's full potential by embarking on a renovation to ensure it remains a top luxury resort as Miami's international epicenter continues to expand. "

Representatives for Marriott International and Gencom did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Points Guy.

Rates for the property currently start at $713 for a one-night stay in March and at 58,000 Marriott Bonvoy points for a one-night stay in April according to a search on the hotel's website. However with this new change ,the hotel is not availableto be booked from May through Dec .15
