Like any corporation or organization, airlines have a distinct company culture shared with and embodied by their workforce. Major U.S. carrier Delta Air Lines is no exception. Within the massive totality of moving parts that make up an airline, one prominent customer-facing group representing the brand is the flight attendant workforce.

It starts with training

Every flight attendant who successfully completes Delta's seven-week intensive training gains world-class skills and is prepared to handle an array of irregular operations, such as evacuations and medical emergencies. They are also instilled with the company's distinct culture of customer service and values before being pinned with wings upon graduation.

The culture is something every flight attendant carries with them throughout their entire career. However, some flight attendants remain A++ students, going above and beyond the call of duty in every scenario at all times. Those flight attendants are sometimes referred to as "Debbie Delta. "

Defining 'Debbie Delta'

You'll find two answers if you Google "What is a Debbie Delta?". The first search result is about a flight attendant with a fruitful career named Debbie Naylor, as recalled by the Pensacola News Journal. While an actual person may be the origin of the term 'Debbie Delta,' there's another definition. The second definition derived from Google inquiry reads:

"'Debbie Delta' is a nickname given to an FA who is Delta through and through. She's Southern. Gracious. Loves her job. And loves Delta!"

This statement is pulled from a 2012 article by Airline Guys titled "Will the real Debbie Delta please stand up!" It's one of the few readily available references you'll find that describes the Debbie referred to in this article.

Going above and beyond

The second, 'Delta through and through,' definition of the term delivers much fewer search results because it's mostly a name or phrase used internally among flight attendants.

'Debbie Delta' is a term of endearment (and occasionally annoyance) used to address fellow Delta flight attendants. When used as a term of endearment, it's typically in a playful or joking manner while working. For example, if a fellow crew member does something great or even performs standard job duties -- which makes using the name super cheeky -- such as getting out of their jumpseat to prepare the beverage cart before anyone else, they may be called a 'Debbie.'

However, there are scenarios where 'Debbie' expresses annoyance about a coworker. For example, if there's turbulence and all other flight attendants have taken their jumpseats but not 'Debbie!' She's up doing water walks even though it may be dangerous.

Flight attendants deeply understand working as a crew. Generally, if one person begins job duties such as water walks or trash pick-up, all crew members feel compelled to join even if they weren't asked. Without teamwork, large tasks like preparing cabins for take-off wouldn't be accomplished.

Characteristics of 'Debbie Delta'

- Company loyalty

- Southern hospitality (even if they aren't from South)

- Goes above and beyond in every scenario

- Gracious and grateful

- Sees no flaws in system

If you look at Delta's hiring guidelines including its corporate #DeltaProud slogan," it's clear that," in certain respects," regardless of candidate's background" or identity)," 'Debbie' exactly what airline seeks potential candidate." As highlighted," 'Debbie'Delta' grateful part airline worn badge honor results high level dedication."
