Zurich Airport | Wikipedia

Zurich Airport (ZRH) serves as a significant connecting hub for SWISS International Airlines, part of the Lufthansa Group and the global Star Alliance. It is the largest international airport in Switzerland by flight operations and passenger traffic, serving Zurich, the country's biggest city and main business center. Located approximately eight miles north of Central Zurich, the airport's land area spans five municipalities within the canton of Zurich.

The history of Zurich Airport dates back to 1909 with a joint-use civil and military airfield at Dubendorf near Zurich. As aviation grew, it became clear that a larger facility was needed exclusively for commercial flights. In 1943, after considering multiple locations, a site between Kloten and Oberglatt was chosen for the new airport. Construction began in 1946, with the first runway opening in 1948.

The airport has undergone significant developments over time. The first terminal opened in 1953, replacing temporary structures set up by individual airlines. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, larger hangars were built, infrastructure improved, and a railway connection to the city was added in 1980.

Security became a concern following terrorist attacks targeting Israeli flag carrier El Al in 1969 and 1970. This led to an overhaul of security measures at Zurich Airport. By the1980s, Terminal A had opened with a new control tower.

Under Switzerland's "Airport 2000" initiative during the1990s, further expansions included constructing a third terminal an underground people-moving system an airside operations center costing over2.4 billion Swiss Francs These projects helped meet increasing demand for passenger air services

In1999 Zurich Airport was fully privatized with Flughafen Zurich AG taking over management Swissair collapsed in2001 leading to declined traffic but growth resumed when SWISS International Air Lines acquired by Lufthansa Group pursued expansion Modernizations followed including building new terminals improving baggage systems
