Saturday, March 8, marked International Women's Day - an opportunity to celebrate women's social, economic, and cultural achievements and their fight for equality and liberation worldwide. Many airlines celebrated the occasion with all-women-operated flights, among other campaigns, to highlight the significant contribution of women to the aviation industry.

Ethiopian Airlines' "all-women" crews

Africa's largest and fastest-growing carrier, Ethiopian Airlines, marked International Women's Day with vibrant events at its hub in Addis Ababa and all-women-operated flights to six destinations on five continents. The airline's workforce comprises 40% of women across various roles, including flight and cabin crew, aircraft technicians, and commercial and managerial positions.

Firstly, the carrier held several events at the Skylight Hotel at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD), attended by government officials, distinguished guests, and airline executives. The airline operated flights entirely managed by women - from catering, maintenance, check-in to lounge services and flight operations.

The special flights were from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar (Ethiopia), Athens, Delhi, Dubai, Windhoek, and São Paulo. These destinations were served by various aircraft types including the Airbus A350, Boeing 787, 737 MAX, and Dash 8-Q400. Speaking about the initiative Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew said:

"We are thrilled to celebrate March 8 as we do every year at Ethiopian Airlines. As an employer of choice we are deeply committed to promoting diversity and inclusion within the aviation industry and the broader community. "

"In today's modern aviation landscape women play an indispensable role across all sectors significantly contributing to the industry's dynamic growth. Today we honor the remarkable achievements of women in aviation and beyond while also inspiring future generations to pursue their dreams without limitations. "

The occasion aimed to recognize incredible achievements of women in breaking stereotypes in traditionally male-dominated fields. Additionally these all- women-operated flights aligned with global calls for gender equality
