Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport | Official Website

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP), also known as Wold-Chamberlain Field, is a major joint civil-military public international airport serving the Twin Cities region of Minneapolis and Saint Paul in Minnesota. The facility is located around 10 miles from the downtown of both Minneapolis and Saint Paul. The airport spans more than 2,930 acres and is the busiest airport in the Upper Midwest.

The airport serves as a major commercial hub for multiple operators and a logistical hub for several major air cargo operators. It houses the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport Joint Air Reserve Station, supporting operations by both the Air Force Reserve Command and the Minnesota Air National Guard.

The economic impact of MSP on the greater Twin Cities region is significant, contributing an estimated $15.9 billion to its economy and supporting approximately 87,000 jobs. MSP is a major hub for Atlanta-based legacy carrier Delta Air Lines, which alongside its regional affiliates accounts for over 70% of passenger traffic at the airport.

Managed by the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), which also oversees six smaller regional facilities within the area, MSP offers various domestic and international flights operated by numerous carriers, ensuring Minnesota remains well-connected to both national and global destinations.

According to data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, here are MSP's five largest airlines by market share:

Delta Air Lines

Market Share: 58.08%

Delta became a hub carrier at MSP following its merger with Northwest Airlines in 2008. Between November 2023 and October 2024, Delta transported around 18.8 million passengers through MSP to over 120 destinations worldwide.

SkyWest Airlines

Market Share: 8.31%

Serving primarily as a regional carrier flying under Delta Connection among others, SkyWest transports approximately 2.7 million passengers annually via high-frequency services connecting smaller cities across the Midwest.

Sun Country Airlines

Market Share: 5.83%

Headquartered in Minneapolis with its main base at MSP, Sun Country operates low-cost flights to more than 60 destinations including leisure hotspots like Florida and Mexico.

Southwest Airlines

Market Share: 5.38%

Although it lacks an operational base at MSP, Southwest transported over1 .7 million passengers last year via major domestic routes such as Denver International Airport (DEN) and Nashville International Airport (BNA).

United Airlines

Market Share:4 .1 %

Despite not having a significant presence or hub status at MSP compared to other airports like Chicago O’Hare Airport (ORD), United still managed around1 .3 million passengers last year focusing primarily on flights between its major hubs.
