American Airlines' extensive network to Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico has made it the United States' second-largest international operator. According to Cirium Diio data, the airline plans an average of 372 daily international takeoffs during the northern aviation summer (March 30 to October 25 based on IATA slot seasons), with numbers varying from as few as 307 to as many as 452.

Despite its vast size, only one in 17 departures is international. However, international flights are at a record level this year, having risen by 3% compared to last summer and by 6% compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

American Airlines operates international flights from 14 hubs, focus cities, and other airports during the northern aviation summer season. Miami stands out as American's top international airport due to its geographic position, diaspora, and numerous short-haul routes. It averages126 daily takeoffs. In contrast, Pittsburgh has the fewest departures with a Saturday-only service to Cancun until May
