Avelo Airlines' International Route Map Grows With 4th Destination

It is hard to believe that Avelo's first passenger-carrying service was in April 2021. In the subsequent four years, its fleet has grown to 20 aircraft, although that's still a modest number. It has 12 189-seat Boeing 737-800s and eight 149-seat 737-700s. With an average age of 16.8 years, they are less fuel- efficient and more maintenance-heavy than newer alternatives but much cheaper to acquire, meaning they don't have to be used as often.

Avelo adds Nassau to its map On March 11, the ultra-low-cost carrier announced a raft of new routes, including flights to three new airports in its network: Grand Rapids, Islip, and—internationally—Nassau. The Bahamas capital is Avelo's fourth international destination.

Photo: Robin Guess | Shutterstock It will be one of two budget carriers serving Nassau alongside JetBlue. Frontier flew to the city between 2021 and 2023, Spirit between 2005 and 2012, and Sun Country between 2015 and 2020.

What do those airlines have in common? None have flown from Raleigh/Durham to Nassau, which Avelo will do from June 11. It'll run twice-weekly on the 737-800. It is scheduled as follows, with all times local:

Raleigh/Durham to Nassau: XP640, 16:08-18:18 (2h 10m block time)

Nassau to Raleigh/Durham: XP641, 19:03-21:12 (2h 9m)

It seems that American served the market until 1991 (when it had its Raleigh/Durham hub) and then briefly in 2004.

Raleigh/Durham to Nassau It is a good-sized market for a thin operation. Booking data shows that the city pair had 24,000 roundtrip passengers in 2024, most of whom connected to other flights in Miami, Charlotte, and Atlanta. Avelo will grow the market from low fares, nonstop flights, and hopefully strong promotions.

Following Avelo's launch of flights from Raleigh/Durham to Punta Cana and Montego Bay (see later in the article), Nassau was the city's largest unserved Caribbean market.

Next are Aruba and Santo Domingo, but will they materialize? They are quite a bit smaller than Avelo's existing markets.

Aruba is typically more expensive to visit than other places it already serves (but then, so is Nassau). Raleigh/Durham-Aruba would be Avelo's longest route, taking up more time and increasing trip costs. I am not convinced that Aruba will be added to Avelo's map.

Avelo Airlines Grows Network With 13 New RoutesThe airline will add these new routes in the summer season.

Six international routes (for now)

While Avelo flew internationally from Lansing and Miami in early to mid-2024, these were charter flights for other companies. They were not scheduled flights bookable through its website.

As summarized below, its own international links began in late 2024. As of March 13, it has six international routes encompassing four tourist-driven destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean. San Juan is excluded as Puerto Rico is considered domestic.

- November 16,2024: Hartford to Montego Bay (twice-weekly 737-800)

- November 20,2024: Hartford to Cancun (twice-weekly 737-800); Avelo's longest route

- February 12,2025: Raleigh/Durham to Montego Bay (twice-weekly 737-700; occasionally the 800)

- February 21,2025: Hartford to Punta Cana (twice-weekly 737-800)

- February 22,2025: Raleigh/Durham to Punta Cana (twice-weekly 737-700; occasionally the 800)

- June 11,2025: Raleigh/DurhamtoNassau(twice weekly\ n737–800)
