Asiana A380 | Official Website

On May 28, Asiana will temporarily cease flying the Airbus A380 from Seoul Incheon to Tokyo Narita, the superjumbo’s current shortest route worldwide. While the plan may change, the double-decker is expected to return on October 1, although not for long. There will be no flights in June, July, August, or September.

The change is one of three cuts to Asiana's A380 network. Also gone are flights to Bangkok (the last flight is on May 18; it returns on October 1) and Taipei (the last flight is on May 29; it returns on October 1). They make way for the type’s return to New York JFK.

During the four-month absence, Korean Air—which now owns about 64% of Asiana, with the merger not yet complete—will continue to deploy its superjumbos to the Taiwanese capital.

The 10 Shortest Ever Superjumbo Airbus A380 Passenger Flights

They covered as little as 160 nautical miles (296 km).

Gone: Seoul Incheon to Tokyo Narita

The South Korean carrier currently serves the 680 nautical mile (1,259 km) market daily on the 495-seat A380. When all carriers are combined, it is one of many widebody aircraft on the short but massively popular airport pair.

Booking data shows that just over two million roundtrip point-to-point passengers traveled between the two airports last year. When Tokyo Haneda was included, traffic rose to 2.2 million and 3.8 million with Seoul Gimpo's addition. More than10,000 people traveled between the South Korean and Japanese capitals daily.

No wonder Cirium Diio data for March 2025 shows that a third of Incheon-Narita services are on twin-aisle equipment. Yet, not surprisingly, "the A380 is the only quadjet to be deployed."
