The Bahamas has announced that Avelo Airlines will add a flight from the metro area known as The Research Triangle to Nassau, the island nation’s capital, starting in June.

Connecting Raleigh-Durham and Nassau

In a statement on March 17, the Bahamian government disclosed that Avelo Airlines will offer a direct connection between Nassau Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) and Raleigh–Durham International Airport (RDU).

The twice-weekly Boeing 737-800 service will begin on June 11, expanding options for natives and tourists to travel between Nassau and Raleigh-Durham, which is part of The Research Triangle metro area in North Carolina, the United States.

Chester Cooper, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments, and Aviation of The Bahamas, said that the island nation was excited to welcome Avelo Airlines’ new service to Raleigh-Durham.

“As a tourism and aviation destination leader, this service further affirms The Bahamas Government’s commitment to working closely with airline partners and industry stakeholders to aggressively grow air stopover arrivals throughout The Islands of The Bahamas. ”

It will now serve Cancun, Montego Bay, Nassau, and Punta Cana.

Access to North Carolina

Latia Duncombe, the Director General of Tourism of The Bahamas, added that expanding connectivity is a top priority for the government, with the new route strengthening access to North Carolina, an important market for the country.

“Avelo Airlines offers new non-stop service, making it even easier for travelers from Raleigh-Durham to experience our vibrant culture, world-class hospitality, and breathtaking islands. ”

With the addition of Avelo Airlines’ service to Nassau, the country’s capital city will now have direct connections to 18 airports in the US in June on flights operated by American Airlines Alaska Airlines Avelo Airlines Bahamasair Delta Air Lines JetBlue and United Airlines according to data from the aviation analytics company Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning tool.

The last time that Nassau and Raleigh-Durham were connected directly with regularly scheduled services was in 2009 when US Airways which was absorbed by American Airlines in 2013 served the seasonal route with up to daily flights.

Up until May 2024 Bahamasair was the only airline with regularly scheduled itineraries from Raleigh-Durham to the Bahamas namely Grand Bahama Freeport Airport FPO .

On March 11 Avelo Airlines announced the Raleigh-Durham-to-Nassau route one of 13 routes that will be added to its network between May and June.
