London Stansted Airport's Sustainable Development Plan (SDP) to accommodate up to 51 million passengers by the 2040s has garnered support from nearly 2,000 people. The plan aims to optimize the use of its single runway and enhance supporting infrastructure.

Supporting sustainable development

London Stansted initiated a consultation on its long-term plan for sustainable growth in early February, engaging with local residents, businesses, passengers, students, and councilors over five weeks. The draft SDP was published in December 2024.

The local community, including those in Uttlesford, East Herts, Harlow, and surrounding areas, shared opinions on the SDP through various channels. Initial results indicate that almost 2,000 of the 2,800 respondents support the plan.

The airport’s social media adverts reached over 750,000 views while detailed surveys and dedicated workshops were conducted. London Stansted Managing Director Gareth Powell said:

“I want to thank everyone for taking the time to contribute, and it’s great to see so many people willing to lend their support to our plan. It’s important that we get this right because we take our responsibilities as integral part of the local community, and commitment to sustainable growth very seriously. ”

“We''ll reflect on what people have said so we can have the best version of a plan that will create more jobs more training opportunities and more choice when flying from their local airport. ”

Gearing for passenger growth

The SDP outlines Stansted’s strategy to maximize social and economic benefits while managing operational impacts on local communities as it prepares for passenger growth.

London Stansted plans to increase its annual passenger limit from 43 million to \~51 million without raising flight numbers permitted. The increased capacity will accommodate airlines’ plans for larger aircraft offering more seats.

The airport will address forecasted passenger growth by improving M11 Junction reducing congestion funding local bus services roads tackling fly-parking collaborating with train operators improving Stansted Express ensuring infrastructure is powered by renewable energy training young people doubling size Airport College ensuring % all journeys public transport relieving pressure roads submitting planning application increasing capacity responses consultation examined finalizing application full results published formally submitted
