Air New Zealand and Air India have entered into a new codeshare partnership and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore direct flights between India and New Zealand. The MoU was signed at an event in Mumbai attended by the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr. Christopher Luxon, and other dignitaries.

The agreement establishes a codeshare partnership on 16 routes connecting India, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. This will offer travelers more choices and convenient access between the two countries.

Customers can now travel from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai on Air India flights and connect via Sydney, Melbourne or Singapore onto Air New Zealand-operated flights to Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, and Queenstown.

The codeshare aims to simplify booking processes for customers while enhancing the visibility of both markets as tourism destinations. Additionally, the MoU includes exploring the introduction of a direct service between India and New Zealand by the end of 2028.

Air New Zealand Chief Executive Greg Foran emphasized India's strategic importance as a future destination due to its expanding tourism market. "India represents a key growth market for Air New Zealand," said Foran. "This codeshare agreement is an important first step... ensuring a strong foundation for a successful direct service by 2028."

Campbell Wilson, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of Air India, expressed delight in deepening relations with Air New Zealand: "This partnership will not only strengthen our presence... but also help us develop traffic so that we may viably operate a non-stop service between India and New Zealand. "

The partnership comes at a time when India is emerging as a significant travel hub. It reflects both airlines' commitment to supporting trade, tourism, and economic growth.

Currently, passengers traveling between New Zealand and India benefit from connectivity options via Singapore Airlines through Singapore. A future direct route would further enhance travel efficiency.

Tourism New Zealand has also committed to growing inbound tourism from India. Research indicates that there is substantial interest among Indian travelers in visiting New Zealand with over18 million people actively considering trips there.

"It's fantastic to see Air New Zealand and Air India working on stronger international connectivity," said Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive Rene de Monchy. "Improved aviation links have a crucial role in the growth of international tourism."

The codeshare flights will be available for booking progressively subject to regulatory approvals.
