The Airbus A321XLR has been a highly anticipated commercial aircraft, symbolizing the trend among airlines to prioritize smaller and more efficient jets for longer routes. After an extensive flight testing program, the type entered service last year, with a second operator also putting it into regular use. Using current fleet data from ch-aviation, this article examines which carriers have ordered the most A321XLRs.

IndiGo

Low-cost carrier IndiGo is India's largest airline by passenger numbers and fleet size. According to ch-aviation's data, the carrier has 926 aircraft on order, including 69 Airbus A321XLRs. These will join 585 units of the standard A321neo.

United Airlines

The US-based carrier has ordered 50 A321XLRs. United Airlines placed its order in December 2019.

American Airlines

American Airlines placed an order for 50 units of the A321XLR back in June 2019.

Henning Greiser, American's Head of International Network Planning, said: "The A321XLR will open up markets that we wouldn't be able to serve otherwise. "

Wizz Air

European budget giant Wizz Air has ordered 47 examples of the Airbus A321XLR.

"The Airbus A321XLR is the most cost-efficient aircraft in its class," said CEO József Váradi.

Air Canada

Air Canada has ordered30 examples of the type.

"Think of a route like Montreal to Toulouse that we started [in2023]," said Mark Galardo, Air Canada's EVP of Revenue and Network Planning.

Qantas

Australian flag carrier Qantas has25 units on order.

"The A321XLR is a fantastic aircraft to be part of our next-generation fleet," said Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson.

Iberia and Aer Lingus

Spanish flag carrier Iberia received its first example last October. It entered service in November on a flight from Madrid Barajas (MAD) to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), with Washington Dulles (IAD) as its first long-haul destination.

I rish flag carrier Aer Lingus received its first two examples in December2024.Flying out of Dublin Airport(DUB), Nashville and Indianapolis have been earmarked as early destinations .
