Hawaii's Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport is set to see the return of two key routes this winter. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines have announced plans to resume flights from Dallas and Salt Lake City, respectively, utilizing widebody aircraft for these services.

Delta Air Lines will expand its service with a new nonstop route from Salt Lake City to Kona, beginning December 19, 2025. This service will operate on the Boeing 767-300ER until March 28, 2026. Delta had previously served this route between 2006 and 2007. Additionally, Delta will increase its connectivity from Salt Lake City to Hawaii by serving Maui four times weekly starting October 6, moving to daily in November and twice daily from December 19 to January 5.

Delta also plans earlier flights from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport beginning November 6 on the Airbus A330-300. These flights will continue throughout the winter season. Moreover, Delta will add a second daily flight between Atlanta and Honolulu during the holiday peak period using the Boeing 767-300ER.

A spokesperson for Delta expressed enthusiasm about these expansions: "We’re excited to strengthen Delta’s network to Hawaii this winter with the addition of new and expanded service, including our new route between Salt Lake City and Kona."

According to Cirium data, Delta currently operates up to 133 scheduled weekly flights from mainland US locations to various Hawaiian destinations as of April 2025.

American Airlines will reintroduce nonstop service from Dallas Fort-Worth International Airport (DFW) to Kona starting November 20, 2025. The daily flights will be operated on the Boeing 787-8 aircraft. This route was last active in early 2022 but was initially planned for resumption in December 2024.

In addition, American Airlines plans a second daily flight from Dallas-Fort Worth to Kahului beginning November 20. Currently operating ten routes to Hawaii, American has up to 98 weekly flights scheduled according to Cirium data.

American Airlines offers premium cabin passengers refreshed dining options inspired by island flavors for spring and summer travel seasons. The airline plans further menu updates for winter travel at a later date.

Both airlines are enhancing their offerings with different aircraft configurations designed for passenger comfort across various classes.
