John Ackerman Chief Executive Officer | Los Angeles World Airports

Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and Councilmember Nithya Raman have announced the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) publication of new departure procedures for Van Nuys Airport. The revised procedures, set to be implemented on February 20, 2025, aim to mitigate noise impacts by adjusting flight paths.

The redesign follows recommendations from the Southern San Fernando Valley Airplane Noise Task Force made in 2020. LAWA formally requested that the FAA amend all three southerly area navigation departure procedures for Van Nuys Airport. Over four years, LAWA collaborated with the FAA and local officials to ensure these changes meet community needs and adhere to safety standards.

“After years of collaboration and effort, we are excited to see this process come to fruition,” said Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman. “These revised procedures are expected to restore flight paths closer to their original alignment, providing relief to our hillside communities in Sherman Oaks and Encino. I appreciate the collaboration of the Southern San Fernando Valley Airplane Noise Task Force and LAWA leadership for helping us meet our goal.”

The updated procedures adjust waypoint locations to address noise issues stemming from a southward shift in flight paths after the FAA's 2017 Metroplex implementation—a previous redesign intended to enhance safety and efficiency across Southern California airspace. These changes respond directly to concerns from residents in Encino, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, and other nearby communities.

“The changes in FAA flight procedures at Van Nuys Airport represent a successful partnership between LAWA, the FAA and local stakeholders,” stated John Ackerman, CEO of Los Angeles World Airports. “LAWA appreciates the thoughtful engagement of our community throughout this process. This adjustment is an example of the positive results that can come from working together to solve problems while maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency.”

Ongoing data collection and dialogue with residents will be essential in addressing noise concerns moving forward. This development underscores LAWA’s dedication to balancing airport operations with community quality of life.
