WestJet has introduced a new transatlantic route from Halifax to Barcelona, marking the first-ever service between these locations. This addition is part of WestJet's expanding European network, which appears to be growing as the airline reduces its operations in the United States.

The airline's schedule indicates a planned record transborder capacity for 2025, although this is less than what was initially scheduled for this year. Meanwhile, WestJet continues to expand its European routes with this latest addition being a notable late entry.

"This brand-new route will cover 2,812 nautical miles (5,208 km) each way," making it Halifax's longest route operated by a Canadian carrier this year. The first flight is set for June 27 and will operate four times weekly on the Boeing 737 MAX 8 until September 28.

Halifax has not had flights to Spain or Southern Europe in two decades. The point-to-point market between Halifax and Barcelona is small, with about 6,000 round-trip passengers annually. However, WestJet aims to grow this market with nonstop service and competitive fares while also connecting passengers from other parts of Canada.

WestJet has previously operated routes to Barcelona from Toronto and Calgary. The new Halifax service means that for the first time, the airline will have two simultaneous routes to Barcelona.

This summer marks WestJet's second new route from Nova Scotia following its launch of flights to Amsterdam. Additionally, WestJet plans to reintroduce Paris CDG flights after a seven-year hiatus.

The airline's longest European MAX-operated flights are primarily from Toronto and include destinations such as Dublin and Edinburgh. The new Halifax-Barcelona route will share the title of joint-longest MAX-operated European service by block time at 7 hours and 45 minutes but ranks third by distance among all routes.
