United Airlines has undertaken a significant refurbishment of its Boeing 767-300ER fleet, opting for a premium-focused configuration. The airline operates two versions of this aircraft, with one featuring a "high J" layout comprising 46 Polaris business-class seats, 22 Premium Plus recliners, 43 Economy Plus seats, and 56 regular United Economy seats. This version can accommodate up to 167 passengers and is utilized in 24 out of the 37 aircraft in the fleet.

The remaining 13 aircraft have a standard configuration with a total of 214 seats: 30 Polaris pods, 46 Economy Plus seats, and 138 Economy seats. The retrofit aims to enhance yield by offering more premium seating options, which can potentially offset lower revenue from economy seats.

United Airlines' global network is extensive, with over 120 international destinations and more than 200 within the United States. "Every day we operate more than 4,500 flights across five continents," stated United. The airline's main U.S. hubs are located in major cities such as Chicago, Denver, Houston, New York/Newark, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.

The rise in demand for premium travel experiences has been notable since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared over five years ago. Editor Gordon Smith at Skift noted that "premium leisure segment led the way in 2024," highlighting increased interest from travelers seeking enhanced comfort on long-haul flights.

In response to these trends, even low-cost carriers like Frontier Airlines and Southwest Airlines are introducing more premium offerings. Frontier began blocking middle seats in certain rows while Southwest plans to offer more legroom options by partnering with Elliot Investment Management.

United offers various cabin experiences across its fleet including United Economy & Basic Economy, Economy Plus, United Premium Plus, United First, United Business, Premium Transcon and United Polaris. Each class provides different levels of service aimed at catering to diverse customer preferences.
