United Airlines has announced changes to its flight schedule for the Boeing 777-200, redirecting one of its daily flights from Washington Dulles International Airport to San Diego International Airport, instead flying to Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport. This adjustment will take effect in late May, with the last flight to San Diego scheduled for May 20 and service to Las Vegas commencing on May 22. The change was highlighted by Ishrion Aviation on Bluesky.

According to Cirium's Diio Mi airline planning tool, this route alteration is temporary and expected to remain in place until August 18. By September, United Airlines plans to resume flights between Washington Dulles and San Diego using the Boeing 777-200. In June, United will operate the aircraft from Washington Dulles to Denver International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport as well.

The decision comes amid increased competition following the Department of Transportation's allocation of beyond-perimeter slots at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) to Alaska Airlines. As a result, Alaska Airlines began offering flights from DCA to San Diego on March 21. "These flights will provide more choice to guests and communities across our network," said an Alaska Airlines representative.

Southwest Airlines also contributes with 20 weekly flights from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) to San Diego in June. Consequently, there will be a total of 55 weekly flights offered by Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines from the Washington-Baltimore area to San Diego.

Meanwhile, Spirit Airlines has ceased its daily service from Baltimore to San Diego as of August 2024; however, this gap was filled by Alaska's new service between Washington-National and San Diego.

United is also making broader adjustments within its domestic network for the Boeing 777-200 aircraft. This includes removing four non-stop routes such as those between Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Los Angeles. Despite these changes, United will still offer up to 325 weekly direct domestic flights using this widebody jet in June.

The airline operates two configurations of economy-heavy Boeing 777-200s: one featuring 28 first-class seats alongside 336 economy seats; another variant present on four specific aircraft features a configuration of 32 first-class seats with 330 economy seats.
