Frontier Airlines is expanding its network with the introduction of three new routes from San Diego International Airport (SAN). The airline will start services to Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) in June. Flights to Chicago will commence on June 12, while those to Austin and Salt Lake City are set to begin on June 13.

Josh Flyr, Vice President of Network and Operations Design at Frontier Airlines, highlighted the company's growing presence in San Diego. He stated, “With Frontier’s trademark low fares available on eight nonstop routes from SAN, now is a better time than ever for consumers in Southern California to make Frontier their airline of choice.”

Frontier's schedule includes daily flights to Chicago, four weekly flights to Austin, and three weekly flights to Salt Lake City. However, the airline will face competition from other carriers such as Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines. These airlines already operate numerous flights on these routes.

According to data from Cirium's Diio Mi airline planning tool, Alaska Airlines offers daily service from San Diego to Salt Lake City and 13 weekly departures to Austin. American Airlines has scheduled 35 weekly departures to Chicago-O’Hare. Delta matches this with 35 weekly departures to Salt Lake City. United also has 35 weekly departures matching American's schedule for Chicago O’Hare.

Southwest Airlines plans daily flights to Salt Lake City and numerous weekly departures both to Austin and Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW). In June 2024, all airlines operating these routes averaged a load factor of 84.4%. Spirit Airlines recorded a lower load factor during its operations between June and August 2024.

Additionally, Frontier has adjusted its operations by reducing capacity on certain existing routes from San Diego. This includes fewer flights to Denver International Airport (DEN) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), along with a complete halt of service to El Paso International Airport (ELP).

Despite these adjustments, Frontier aims for an overall increase in available seats with the addition of new routes starting in June.
