Esperanza Maciel, an employee at Flying Food Group (FFG), has accused the union Unite Here of dishonesty. She said that the union offered her $300 to provide "false information" about her employer. Maciel made these allegations during a Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) meeting on March 13.

"They offered $300 to my coworkers and me to provide false information about our employer Flying Food," said Maciel, Flying Food Group Employee. "Because of this, I decided to report them to the National Labor Relations Board. They tell us to lie. They're not honest people."

According to Maciel, who has been with FFG for seven years, she testified at the LAWA board meeting regarding her experience with Unite Here Local 11. She claimed that after choosing not to participate in a strike on April 10, 2023, the union intimidated and threatened her. Additionally, she alleged that the union offered $300 to her and other coworkers in exchange for false statements about their employer. Maciel reported this incident to the National Labor Relations Board, expressing concerns over what she described as the union's dishonesty.

Maciel further said that she is dealing with health challenges due to a long-term medical condition requiring ongoing treatment but currently lacks insurance because Unite Here Local 11 withheld crucial information from her. As a result, she travels to Mexico every few weeks for treatment, unable to receive adequate care in the United States due to this lack of insurance.

In an interview with Sky Industry News, Maciel said that Unite Here Local 11 prioritizes its interests over workers' well-being. She accused the union of bringing in new short-term employees to make false accusations against the company, including fabricated claims of sexual abuse—claims which she denied having encountered during her seven years at FFG. "The union recruited them," Maciel said, adding that she imagined they were paid for these actions. "That’s exactly what they tried to do with us too: offer us money to give false information about the company."

Maciel called for an investigation into the union's practices and advocated for a vote allowing employees to decide whether they wish to remain part of the union. She expressed that many long-time employees feel unsupported and disillusioned by the union and urged changes in worker representation.
