American Airlines has announced an expansion of its seating capacity for flights between Los Angeles and Vancouver for the summer months. According to information from Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning tool, the airline will switch from the Airbus A319 to the Boeing 737-800 on this route, offering 21.4% more seats year-on-year between June 5 and August 5.

The Boeing 737-800, used primarily for this route during the period, will offer 172 seats compared to the A319’s 128 seats. However, the airline plans to revert to the A319 on August 6.

This expansion is part of a broader increase in American Airlines' capacity to Canada, with a 14.6% rise in seat numbers for various routes during summer 2025. The airline is reintroducing several routes that were not available during the same period in 2024, such as flights from Chicago to Halifax and from Dallas/Fort Worth to Québec City.

WestJet, which intended to launch a new route between Calgary and New York-LaGuardia, has decided against it. Canadian and US airlines have recently reduced several transborder flights due to ongoing tensions.

Despite reports of a significant dip in forward bookings, Air Canada has presented a different perspective. An Air Canada spokesperson noted that the decline in demand is not as severe as the blog post suggested: “While we have experienced a softening in the transborder market – and have shifted a limited amount of capacity to adapt to it as previously announced – the decline Air Canada has experienced is not of the magnitude cited in the blog."

Air Canada plans to discuss its situation in more detail during its upcoming quarterly earnings call.
