Airbus A350-900ULR | Official Website

The Airbus A350-900ULR, a variant of the A350-900, is designed to extend the reach of flight and aims to capture the market for ultra-long-haul travel. This aircraft is positioned to challenge models such as the Boeing 777-200LR and Boeing 787-10, boasting better performance especially in empty weight, fuel consumption, and operational expenses when compared to the Boeing 777-200ER.

Key routes benefiting from this model include Singapore Airlines’ flights to Newark and JFK, capitalizing on the demand for non-stop journeys. The A350-900ULR enhances the reach of the standard Airbus A350-900 by about 1,400 nautical miles (2,593 kilometers), enabling routes as extensive as the Singapore-New York connection, over 17,000 kilometers (9,182 nautical miles).

The A350 platform was introduced to improve fuel efficiency against Boeing's 787 Dreamliner. The aircraft's development began with the A350's first flight in 2013. Equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, the A350-900 model promises a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to the Airbus A340-300, qualifying it as environmentally conscious.

Singapore Airlines, which has invested in 65 of these aircraft, was able to resume the world’s longest flight between New York and Singapore due to the A350-900ULR. Airbus revealed, "With the delivery of the first A350-900ULR to launch customer Singapore Airlines, the A350 XWB Family is positioned to lead the way for new ultra-long-range operations."

Nevertheless, the numbers ordered by Singapore Airlines are limited, with only seven units of the ultra-long-range variant. No other airlines have followed suit in acquiring more of these aircraft. The A350-900ULR remains ecologically advantageous with its fuel-efficient design modifications and continues to reconnect travelers across the globe.

Marisa Lucas-Ugena, Airbus' A350 Marketing Director, assured that modifications for the A350-900 to become a ULR variant had "no impact" on production lines. With this assurance, Airbus targets a production rate of 10 A350s monthly to meet demand. Airbus and Singapore Airlines' collaboration highlights the strong industrial relationship which enabled the creation and operation of this unique long-haul travel craft.

According to Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew, “We are keen to expand our fleet size, acquiring the latest technology aircraft to offer a convenient and memorable onboard experience.”

Incorporating intelligent use of existing space for fuel capacity without structural alterations, the A350-900ULR stands as an engineering success in aviation, advancing the potential of ultra-long flights while maintaining efficiency in operations.
