United Airlines has received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its Starlink-equipped Embraer 175 aircraft. This certification paves the way for Starlink technology installation across the airline's entire fleet of regional jets by year-end.

The FAA issued a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the Embraer 175, facilitating Starlink connectivity modifications from its original design. With this development, United is preparing to launch its first customer flight featuring Starlink on a United Express Embraer 175 by May, following an eight-month preparation period.

Grant Milstead, United's Vice President of Digital Technology, remarked, "We know customers are going to love this experience, and we think it will give them yet another reason to choose United. We're working closely with Starlink and the FAA to finish installs on our regional fleet this year and bring the best inflight experience in the sky to more and more people."

Before the inaugural customer flight in May, United will conduct a beta test of the new technology to ensure a smooth debut. The airline plans to install Starlink on approximately 40 jets each month, aiming to cover over 300 two-cabin regional fleet planes by year-end.

United intends to work with Starlink to secure FAA STCs for each aircraft type receiving the new equipment, totaling more than 16 regional and mainline models. According to United, Starlink offers a faster and simpler installation process, is lighter, more reliable, and weather-resistant compared to other systems.

The Starlink system can be installed in about four days, compared to ten days for traditional systems. Additionally, it weighs 85 pounds as opposed to up to 300 pounds for other systems. Its electronically steered, maintenance-friendly design also requires less fuel, providing cost savings for the airline. Weather conditions are less of an issue due to the system's weather-proofed inter-satellite laser link technology.

For MileagePlus customers, Starlink access will be complimentary, providing entertainment options such as streaming services, online shopping, gaming, and more, thanks in part to Wi-Fi speeds reaching 250 megabits per second (Mbps), which is 50 times faster than current speeds on regional aircraft.

Several airlines have already adopted Starlink, while others are considering implementation. Hawaiian Airlines began offering Starlink's high-speed WiFi on all Airbus-operated flights in February 2024, becoming the first major US carrier to do so. Recently, it was suggested that Alaska Airlines might soon announce Starlink on-board services. Qatar Airways plans to introduce complimentary Starlink-powered WiFi across its fleet within two years, while SAS and other airlines are also considering the system.
