Pilatus PC-24 | Wikipedia

The Pilatus PC-24, a light business jet from Swiss manufacturer Pilatus Aviation, is notable for its performance and versatility, combining capabilities often seen in larger aircraft. Initially developed in 2007 as an advancement from the single-engine PC-12, the PC-24 received its first orders at the 2014 European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (EBACE). It sold 84 units in 36 hours, underlining its immediate market appeal.

With a yearly operational cost exceeding one million dollars, the PC-24 entails significant investment from owners and operators. The aircraft cost calculator estimates an average operating budget of $1,717,997 per year based on 450 hours of flight and $6 per gallon of fuel. Liberty Jet, analyzing different usage scenarios, suggests that 200 annual flying hours necessitate $911,480, while 400 hours cost $1,539,460. They calculate an average cost per mile of $11.33 for 200 hours and $9.56 for 400 hours, assuming an average speed of 402 miles per hour.

For those flying 300 hours annually, Guardian Jet estimates a purchase cost of $13,050,000. The fixed annual operating costs are approximately $499,053, with variable costs of $2,255.48 per hour, including maintenance and other variables, summing up to a total operational cost of $1,175,697 annually.

Oscar Schwenk, chairman of Pilatus, highlights the unique niche the PC-24 fills: “Our PC-24 has proven that it is capable of flying the full range of missions for which it was developed. The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia and operators in North America or Africa already use rough field runways on a regular basis, proving just how unique the PC-24 is – that sort of capability is only available with the Pilatus Super Versatile Jet!”

The PC-24 was first introduced in 2013, achieving its maiden flight in 2015. By 2017, it received certification from both the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), allowing it to operate on a variety of runway surfaces previously off-limits to jets: grass, sand, and gravel. The PC-24's design includes twin Williams FJ44 turbofan engines, a range of 2,000 nautical miles, and the capacity to carry up to 12 passengers. An updated version released in 2023 increased payload capacity and range slightly.

Sales continue strongly, with a total of 278 aircraft built and still in production. The PC-24 remains popular with private operators, air charter companies, and services like Australia's Royal Flying Doctor Service due to its ability to land on unpaved airstrips.

With a planned production lifecycle spanning 40 years, Pilatus aims to produce 4,000 units, a testament to the aircraft's enduring demand and versatility in various aviation roles.
