American Airlines has made a strategic choice to focus its operations along the East Coast, operating significant hubs from New York City down to Florida. This approach contrasts with its limited West Coast presence, where it maintains only a small hub at Los Angeles International Airport. While both Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have established multiple hubs on the West Coast, American Airlines has invested in building its extensive network along the Atlantic Coast.

A central question facing American Airlines is why it has chosen to develop so many hubs on the East Coast, deviating from the more balanced geographical distribution of hubs seen in its peer airlines. American Airlines operates six hubs along the East Coast, more than either of its main competitors. These hubs are part of a broader strategy to improve connectivity and compete in a crowded market.

Miami International Airport (MIA) is a pivotal hub for American Airlines, serving as a crucial link to Latin American destinations. The airport has shown growth spurred by increased travel demand post-pandemic. Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) serves as an important hub for international routes and attracts many business travelers.

Reagan National Airport (DCA) near Washington, D.C., serves mainly domestic routes due to operational limits, reflecting its proximity to the nation's capital. Further north, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) acts as a major hub where American Airlines offers numerous transatlantic flights.

In New York, American Airlines operates out of both LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). While LaGuardia primarily serves domestic travelers with operational limitations, JFK is designed for long-haul flights. However, American faces stiff competition at JFK from other airlines like Delta Air Lines and JetBlue.

"American Airlines has clearly decided that operating a massive number of hubs along the Atlantic Coast is the best pathway forward for the carrier."

The rationale for American's fragmented East Coast presence is complex. Certain hubs like Miami, Philadelphia, and Charlotte are considered fortress hubs, where the airline holds a significant market share. Conversely, at facilities like JFK, American faces heavy competition and lacks dominant market control.

"American Airlines connects Miami quite efficiently to the rest of the United States, and the airport also serves as the linchpin of the airline's Latin American network, with flights to far-flung destinations."

To maintain its East Coast footprint, American Airlines must juggle its network of competed and fortress hubs. This arrangement underscores the challenging dynamics of a competitive aviation market that limits broader expansion in certain high-demand areas. Despite these challenges, American Airlines continues to utilize its hub-and-spoke structure to facilitate extensive domestic and international travel connections.

American Airlines' decision to concentrate hubs along the East Coast resulted from strategic choices to maximize connectivity and service efficiency while responding to competitive market pressures.
