The Routes Asia 2025 conference held in Perth, Western Australia, highlighted the current state of the Asia Pacific airline industry. Subhas Menon, Director General of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), discussed how the industry's health reflects global economic conditions, noting that when air travel prospers, tourism, trade, and the broader economy tend to do well too.

Menon pointed out that the airline industry's growth has surpassed pre-pandemic levels, achieving a notable 10.5% in 2024 compared to 4.2% in 2019. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), air transport in the Asia-Pacific region supported 42 million jobs and contributed $890 billion to the regional GDP in 2024. Additionally, air routes in this region accounted for seven out of the ten busiest international routes.

Despite these positive developments, presenters at the conference highlighted ongoing challenges, particularly concerning supply chain issues. The industry is facing a shortfall in aircraft deliveries expected over the next two years, attributed to shortages in skilled labor, engine issues, spare parts availability, and constraints at Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) centers.

Cost increases are evident across all industry components, except for jet fuel. In terms of efficiency, Asia-Pacific has seen a rise in load factors, which hit 80.2% in January 2024 and 83.7% in January 2025, exceeding pre-COVID-19 levels where they ranged between 80% and 81%.

One pressing concern is the cost associated with moving towards an environmentally sustainable model. IATA's Sustainability and Economics Report estimates that between 3,096 and 6,658 new renewable fuel plants will be needed, costing $3.9 trillion to $8.1 trillion. Achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 will require extensive investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), estimated at $4.7 trillion, impacting passenger fares.

Although revenue and profit margins are tight, with an average net profit of only $7 per passenger in 2024, the North American region continues to lead in absolute net profits. However, it has not yet returned to pre-pandemic profitability, particularly in the low-cost segment. Europe has also faced multiple challenges, which have slightly reduced profits to $10 billion in 2024. However, an expected growth in Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPKs) at 7% in 2025, especially from improvements in the low-cost carrier sector, is anticipated.

The Asia Pacific airline industry showcases robust post-pandemic recovery but still faces several significant challenges, including supply chain constraints, rising costs, and the shift towards sustainability. The outlook remains optimistic for the region, provided supply chain issues are addressed in the coming years.
