The aviation industry's push towards decarbonization has gained momentum with the launch of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Registry. The platform was released to the Civil Aviation Decarbonization Organization (CADO) for operation. It aims to provide all global airlines access to SAF and to help them meet climate-related obligations by ensuring that SAF purchases are recorded in a way that prevents double counting.

Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA's Senior Vice President Sustainability and Chief Economist, emphasized the importance of collective effort in aviation's decarbonization and the role of the SAF Registry. "Aviation’s decarbonization is a team effort. In releasing the SAF Registry to CADO for launch, we have put in place a critical platform for the benefit of all stakeholders," she stated.

The registry records SAF transactions globally, contributing to transparency. It overcomes the challenge of limited SAF supply by linking airlines with producers and suppliers. It also allows airlines’ corporate customers to benefit from in-sector emissions reductions and co-finance decarbonization efforts.

Marie Owens Thomsen also highlighted the need for policy support to increase renewable energy production, including SAF: "Further progress requires active policy support for the ramping-up of all renewable energy production, and for SAF within that production."

The registry is neutral in terms of technology and feedstock, promoting diverse SAF production worldwide. It can adapt to specific regulations while supporting global harmonization. Interoperability with other registries is designed to encourage competition and open markets.

Developed with input from various stakeholders, the SAF Registry has over 30 early users ready to adopt the system. Initially free until April 2027, it will later be managed on a cost recovery basis.

CADO, the organization tasked with maintaining and operating the registry, was established in March 2025 in Montreal. It is a not-for-profit organization supported by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), a founding member that provides technical and operational assistance.
