New York's John F. Kennedy Airport has been highlighted for its mishandling of baggage. A study by Upgraded Points ranks it second among U.S. airports with the highest number of baggage complaints, with 1.72 complaints per 100,000 passengers. These complaints mainly include delayed, lost, damaged, or stolen luggage, with delayed luggage making up 80% of mishandled baggage incidents.

The report lists Orlando International Airport as the top airport for baggage complaints with 1.81 complaints per 100,000 passengers. Palm Beach International, Ted Stevens Anchorage International, and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International also made the list of airports with poor baggage handling.

Rick Cotton, Executive Director of the Port Authority of NY and NJ, was noted as part of JFK's management. Factors such as high passenger volume, complex operations, aging infrastructure, and staffing challenges contribute to JFK's baggage handling issues.

Efforts to improve baggage handling at JFK include cooperation with air services organizations, renovations, and new tech implementations. In 2017, a partnership with Dnata aimed at improving efficiency was formed at Terminal 4. Gert-Jan de Graaff, JFKIAT's president and CEO, stated, "Terminal 4 is continuously enhancing its operations in order to improve passenger satisfaction" and highlighted measures to assist airline customers and travelers.

In 2024, Terminal 8 underwent renovations including the introduction of better baggage systems. The New Terminal One is set to have advanced security and cargo facilities. There is also an industry-wide push toward using technologies like automation, RFID systems, and tracking apps to enhance baggage handling efficacy.

Airlines also play a critical role in baggage management. They must ensure accurate tagging, loading, and transportation of luggage. Investment in technology and optimized staff training helps reduce mishandling rates.

Passengers should remain informed and take proactive steps to avoid issues, such as understanding baggage policies and promptly reporting problems. These strategies are part of a broader approach involving infrastructure upgrades, staff training, collaboration among stakeholders, and enhanced passenger engagement to prevent baggage mishandling at JFK Airport.
