In 2026, Boeing's modernized 777X aircraft is set to enter the market after a series of delays. As anticipation builds for this new aircraft, the aviation industry is phasing out older models, particularly the Boeing 777-200. Currently, United Airlines, ANA (All Nippon Airways), and MaxAir are the remaining airlines operating this variant. United's fleet of 777-200s is notably aging, with some aircraft nearing 30 years old.

The Boeing 777 was designed to bridge the gap between the smaller 767 and the larger 747. Its first flight occurred in June 1994, and United Airlines received the first delivery a year later. According to SKYbrary, the 777-200 was "Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner with an EFIS Flight Deck and Flight Envelope Protection."

Boeing's records indicate that 88 of the 139 ordered 777-200s were delivered. These aircraft typically accommodate 301 to 368 passengers, with a range extending from 5,240 to 9,395 nautical miles. The 777-200 variant was predominantly aimed at the US domestic market, although international carriers such as ANA and British Airways also incorporated it into their fleets.

The Boeing 777-200ER emerged as a more favored variant, offering enhanced range and capacity for 301 passengers. Axon Aviation Group notes: "The 777-200ER is an extended range version... with a maximum range of 7,730 nautical miles." British Airways, being the launch customer, received the first Boeing 777-200ER in 2007. Over time, 422 units were distributed among 33 airlines.

The limited number of remaining 777-200 models is distributed among United, ANA, and MaxAir, a Nigerian airline. United Airlines, with a robust fleet of 96 Boeing 777s, operates 17 of the lingering 777-200s. According to United, these aircraft are set to be replaced by Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A350s. United's 777-200s have varied seating configurations, some with up to 50 business class seats.

ANA's fleet includes two older 777-200s, both approximately 20 years old. Max Air, a relatively newer player in the aviation sector, runs one 777-200, which it acquired from Japan Airlines in 2023.

With the impending arrival of the 777X, the industry is transitioning from the older 777-200 variants to newer and more efficient models. Boeing asserts that the 777X will deliver a 10% reduction in fuel use and emissions, enhancing operational efficiency.

As airlines upgrade their fleets, the end of the line for the aging 777-200 models is in sight. United Airlines plans to replace these models with new technology in the form of the Boeing 787 Dreamliners and the Airbus A350s.
