Scottsdale Airport, located in Maricopa County, Arizona, nine miles from Scottsdale's downtown, operates as one of the largest single runway facilities in the United States. Despite not being a commercial airport and lacking facilities for airlines, it serves as a hub for general and private aviators, supported by three Fixed Base Operators (FBOs) on-site. The airport can handle aircraft weighing 100,000 lbs or lighter, making it unsuitable for larger commercial jets. Nevertheless, it witnesses around 195,852 takeoffs and landings yearly, according to a Scottsdale government fact sheet.

Scottsdale Airport is city-owned and functions as a financial entity independent of government subsidies. According to the Scottsdale government website, it serves as a significant employment source, with over 85 major companies and 3,233 small and medium-sized businesses based in its Airpark. In 2019, private aviation activity generated $1 billion in regional economic benefits, supporting 5,970 jobs with income totaling $320 million, according to a 2021 Arizona Aviation Economic Impact Study.

In 2023, Scottsdale Airport ranked among the top ten busiest private jet airports in the U.S., hosting over 28,000 private jet departures. The airport spans 282 acres and features a single runway, indicated as 3/21, which accommodates smaller aircraft.

Historically, the airport originated as a military pilot training field, Thunderbird #2, during World War II. After its closure, it was acquired by the City of Scottsdale in 1966 and renamed Scottsdale Airport. The airport briefly provided commercial service from 1989 to 1990, but the closest to commercial operations now is JSX, which moved its Phoenix operations to Scottsdale in January 2024. JSX operates under Federal Aviation Regulations Part 135, allowing it to offer services resembling a business-class airline.

Scottsdale Airport recorded 202,564 operations in 2020, the majority of which were general aviation operations (91%). The airport also supports air taxi services and minimal military operations. As of 2020, 356 aircraft were based at the airport, including single-engine aircraft, jet aircraft, multi-engine aircraft, and helicopters.

The airport witnessed significant construction projects, including a new aviation business center in 2019 and an additional 18,000-square-foot hangar by Jet Aviation in June 2023. "Scottsdale has grown to be a key location in our FBO network, and we are pleased to open the doors on another new hangar there," said David Best, Jet Aviation’s SVP of regional operations and general manager of the Americas.

Scottsdale Airport's location contributes to its popularity, with several major destinations within a 35-minute drive. The airport's appeal is also fueled by the growing private aviation industry, offering modern and cost-effective services to cater to this rising demand.
