Kirill Dmitriev CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund | Official Website

Talks continue regarding the possibility of resuming direct flights between the United States and Russia. Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), met with personnel from the Trump administration, including Steve Witkoff, the US Special Envoy to the Middle East. Reports indicate that the meetings involved discussions on economic ties and the potential restoration of direct flights. Dmitriev commented, “US-based companies have a great desire to return to Russia,” and noted Russia’s efforts to restore direct flights to the US.

A New York Times report noted this as a recurring topic of discussion between the two nations. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had earlier underscored the importance of achieving tangible outcomes in fostering bilateral relations. A statement from a previous meeting in Istanbul emphasized encouraging the American side to restore direct air services.

Direct flights from Russia were suspended in 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent European Commission sanctions package extending the flight ban. Despite this, at least 13 airlines from various countries—such as Air China, Turkish Airlines, and Qatar Airways—continue to offer flights to the US with stopovers.

The resumption of direct air services would allow Russian citizens to travel directly to the US rather than through third-party destinations like Istanbul or Dubai. This potential development comes amid ongoing diplomatic talks by the Trump administration despite the geopolitical tensions due to Russia's actions in Ukraine.
