Southwest Airlines has commenced a new nonstop service between Tulsa International Airport and Nashville International Airport, becoming the sole airline to offer this link. The first flight took place on April 8, marking a new connection aimed at enhancing travel opportunities for Tulsa residents.

The new direct flight service was introduced with celebrations at the Tulsa airport, including live music by local country artist Joleen Brown. According to Tulsa Airport, passengers on the inaugural flight participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony and were treated to various giveaways.

"Nashville saw 17.1 million visitors in 2024, marking a 2% increase from the previous year, and anticipates welcoming 18.1 million in 2025." This potential surge in visitors underscores the significance of the route for Southwest Airlines, which is investing in the Tulsa-Nashville connection.

Stephanie Chester, Director of Marketing and Customer Engagement at Tulsa International Airport, expressed optimism about the new route, saying, "We’re excited to see Southwest Airlines continue to invest in Tulsa with the addition of nonstop service to Nashville. This new route strengthens the connection between two incredible music cities, making it easier than ever for travelers to experience all that Tulsa and Nashville have to offer. Whether for business or a fun trip, this flight enhances opportunities for tourism, and we are grateful for Southwest’s ongoing commitment to our community."

There are currently five airlines operating nonstop flights from Tulsa to 23 destinations nationwide. In 2024, the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics (ODAA) announced significant investments to upgrade state airports, including Tulsa International. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also committed $13 million for improvements at Tulsa, particularly for replacing an old control tower to enhance visibility and accessibility.

Alexis Higgins, CEO of the Tulsa Airports Improvement Trust, stated, “The Airport Terminal Program grant application process is competitive, with limited funding available. Many airports across the country, similar in size to TUL, have aging terminals and towers. We are beyond grateful to receive these additional funds for our essential new air traffic control tower project.”

Southwest Airlines, recognized for altering its business model, has made recent decisions like discontinuing free checked baggage and changing its seating policy. The airline, which has been responding to the influence of Elliott Management, still aims to expand services despite these changes.
