In an exclusive interview at Routes Asia, Scott Zeglin, Qantas' Head of Commercial Strategy and Performance, provided details about the airline's global expansion plans, fleet upgrades, and the introduction of Project Sunrise, which aims to transform long-haul air travel. He highlighted how Qantas is preparing for a new era in aviation.

Discussing the airline's prominent routes, Zeglin confirmed the success of Qantas' Perth to London flights, describing them as a "commercial triumph" with high passenger loads. Despite minor challenges, such as necessary fuel stops due to extended flight paths, the demand for these services remains strong. Additionally, Qantas' recently launched Perth to Paris route has shown significant interest in direct travel between Australia and Europe.

Qantas has been focusing on expanding its presence in the South Pacific, with the Qantas Group significantly increasing its capacity compared to pre-pandemic levels. This expansion includes launching routes such as Brisbane to Palau and boosting regional connectivity for travelers seeking non-stop European flights and future Project Sunrise services. The introduction of the Brisbane–Palau route further enhances Qantas' South Pacific network by offering Australian travelers access to unique locations.

Furthermore, Jetstar, Qantas' budget subsidiary, plays a vital role in the airline’s strategy by optimizing flight schedules and providing increased connectivity to the long-haul network. This includes new direct routes from Perth to popular leisure destinations like Phuket and Bangkok, supported by the new A321LR aircraft.

In terms of fleet renewal, Qantas is in the midst of its largest fleet upgrade ever, acquiring new Boeing 787s and Airbus A350-1000LRs. These will replace older aircraft and add more route possibilities, especially within Asia. However, Zeglin acknowledged that global supply chain disruptions have posed challenges, causing the airline to lease additional aircraft and upgrade existing ones.

The much-anticipated Project Sunrise is set to redefine long-haul travel, with high demand for premium seating noted at Routes Asia. With nearly half of the seating designated as premium and the lowest passenger density for an Airbus A350-1000, the service promises enhanced comfort. Project Sunrise is on track to connect Sydney and Melbourne to New York City and London non-stop by the Northern Hemisphere's summer of 2027.

Zeglin addressed concerns about potential route cannibalization, noting that alternate routes offer additional economy seating, ensuring comprehensive solutions for all travelers. While acknowledging the ongoing global challenges in aircraft availability and supply chains, Qantas remains optimistic. New aircraft acquisitions, innovative scheduling, and strategic partnerships are expected to further strengthen Qantas’ network and enhance passenger experiences.
