A LATAM Brasil Airbus A319-100, identified as flight LA3276, faced a runway excursion incident while landing at Chapecó, Brazil, after a weather-induced missed approach. The flight, originating from São Paulo Guarulhos, carried 107 passengers and crew. Adverse weather initially led the crew to abort its first landing attempt on runway 29. After a 20-minute holding pattern, the aircraft made a second landing attempt at 19:36 local time. The A319 landed but overran the runway end by approximately 55 meters, coming to a halt on soft ground. The incident did not result in any injuries, and the aircraft remained largely undamaged.

Upon the aircraft's arrival, local METAR weather reports described scattered clouds at 2,000 feet, 9,000 meters visibility, and wind from 120 degrees at 8 knots, with light rain and thunderstorms near the area.

Chapecó Airport's lone 2,060-meter runway typically suffices for the Airbus A319's landing under dry conditions, which generally requires between 1,500 to 1,600 meters. Wet conditions, however, can increase stopping distances by up to 20%, impacting safety margins. Factors like aircraft weight, delayed touchdown, and diminished braking can further challenge stopping ability, particularly at regional airports such as Chapecó, where surface treatments may be less comprehensive.

The Brazilian Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) has been informed and has commenced an official investigation to identify contributing factors. Although adverse weather is suspected to have contributed, conclusions will depend on the investigation's findings.

This incident adds to Brazil's history of runway excursions amidst challenging weather and infrastructure. Notably, TAM Airlines Flight 3054 overran Congonhas Airport's runway during a 2007 landing in rainy conditions, leading to 199 fatalities. Other incidents include Avianca Brasil's 2019 minor runway excursion at Rio de Janeiro/Galeão and Pantanal Linhas Aéreas Flight 4763's 2007 runway deviation at Congonhas, neither of which resulted in injuries.

Additionally, a LATAM Boeing 777-300ER experienced a tailstrike incident on July 9, 2024, while departing Milan Malpensa on flight LA8073 due to incorrect takeoff speeds being entered into the FMS. The aircraft returned safely with no injuries.

Events like the Chapecó runway excursion and Milan tailstrike stress the tight margins in aviation. Even minor performance planning or execution deviations can lead to significant operational consequences, emphasizing the need for precision, awareness, and strong safety measures for airlines like LATAM.
