Comcast NBCUniversal has unveiled its initiative to establish Europe's first Universal theme park in Bedford, England. Slated to open in 2031, this would mark the company's fifth theme park globally, augmenting existing sites in the U.S., Japan, Singapore, and China.

Mark Woodbury, chairman and CEO of Universal destinations and experiences, stated, "Bringing the Universal brand to the United Kingdom is another exciting step forward in generating future growth. Expanding into Europe presents us with a significant opportunity to reach new fans and share the incredible experiences our team creates."

Plans for the Bedford site, approximately 35 miles north of London, include a theme park, a 500-room hotel, and a retail, dining, and entertainment complex. In 2023, Comcast procured a 476-acre land parcel in Bedford, with subsequent feasibility assessments starting in 2024.

The location offers accessible transportation options via high-speed rail, and notably, more than 80% of England's population resides within two hours of the site.

While details on the attractions are yet to be disclosed, concept art suggests a range of themed lands and various rides catering to different demographics.

In a press release, Mike Cavanagh, president of Comcast Corporation, commented, "The unparalleled storytelling and technological innovation that the incredible team at Universal Destinations & Experiences brings to life is a perfect complement to the British creative arts and tourism industries."

Pending final government approvals, construction is projected to commence in 2026. The project forecasts a 50 billion pound economic impact and anticipates drawing up to 8.5 million visitors in its first year.

Stay updated for further information as the project progresses.
