Ethiopian Airlines has announced the launch of a new passenger flight to Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, set to commence on June 1, 2025. The announcement was made via an X post on April 8.

Sharjah, recognized as the Cultural Capital of the Arab World by UNESCO in 1998, has evolved into a global hub for contemporary art and design. The emirate hosts significant events such as the Sharjah Art Biennial and the Sharjah Architecture Triennial, which promote public engagement and reflection on regional traditions. These initiatives have solidified Sharjah's status in the international art scene, attracting artists and visitors worldwide.

In November 2024, Ethiopian Airlines took delivery of its first Airbus A350-1000, becoming the first African carrier to operate this aircraft model. According to Ethiopian Airlines, the A350-1000 is designed to enhance premium services on key destinations including Washington D.C., London, Paris, and Frankfurt. This addition aligns with the airline's strategy to expand its long-haul capabilities and improve passenger experience.

In March 2024, Ethiopian Airlines signed an agreement with Boeing to purchase eight 777-9 passenger airplanes, with options for an additional 12 jets. This deal positions Ethiopian Airlines as the first African customer for the Boeing 777X. The airline states that this supports their plans to expand its fleet and reach new markets across Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. The 777-9's range and capabilities are expected to enhance Ethiopian Airlines' capacity for both passengers and cargo.

Ethiopian Airlines was established in 1945 as Ethiopia's flag carrier and has developed into the largest airline on the African continent. As of 2024, it operates a fleet of 146 aircraft from manufacturers including Boeing and Airbus. The airline serves over 150 domestic and international passenger and cargo destinations across five continents. Ethiopian Airlines has ambitious plans to double its fleet and route network by 2035 with aims to significantly boost revenue and passenger numbers.
