Air New Zealand has announced its latest uniform redesign as a tribute to its cultural roots and a display of creativity, having enlisted the talents of renowned designer Emilia Wickstead. The new uniforms incorporate prints by artist Te Rangitu Netana, described as a celebration of "Aotearoa, artistry, and creativity."

The airline plans to commence onboard trials for the new uniforms in May, with a full rollout anticipated in 2026. The design integrates sustainability measures by using recycled polyester and organic cotton, highlighting a commitment to environmental responsibility.

Greg Foran, CEO of Air New Zealand, noted the significance of the new uniforms, saying: "For us, this is more than just a uniform. It is a celebration of our people, our culture, and our values. Air New Zealand has never been about standing still or blending in."

Wickstead, who hails from New Zealand, was selected for the project in 2023. Her career has included renowned clients such as Catherine, Princess of Wales, and Samantha Cameron. The range of designs in the new uniforms spans various roles, with purple as a unifying theme. One standout piece, The Fine Print dress, features a tūī knot neckline and kōwhai print, signifying protection and belonging.

Additionally, the airline has developed the Ie Faitaga, a ceremonial garment that will be worn to honor Pacific heritage as part of its inclusivity efforts. Pilots will don pinstriped suits with a special kiwi feather print lining.

Air New Zealand acknowledges the collaboration with Wickstead, recognizing it as a "passion project" for the designer. Through incorporating Te Rangitu Netana's hand-drawn prints, the uniforms "bring powerful narratives to life," according to the airline, making them an emblem of storytelling for Air New Zealand.

Looking ahead, the uniform trials will determine their efficacy before the broader implementation, ensuring that the staff continues to present a unified and distinctive appearance worldwide.
