United Airlines has invested $352 million into a technical operations center at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) as part of its strategy to improve efficiency and address legacy operational challenges stemming from its merger with Continental Airlines in 2010. The new center, which began operations in 2022, is home to over 500 employees.

Los Angeles serves as one of United's key hubs and is crucial for maintaining its fleet, particularly widebody aircraft. Prior to the new facility, United's post-merger technical operations were spread over facilities more than a mile apart, leading to inefficiencies and logistical hurdles in operations.

Vice President of United's Technical Operations, Joe Iwelumo, emphasized the importance of the new establishment: "The new LAX Tech Ops Center allows us to provide exceptional on-time performance for our customers and offers our employees a state-of-the-art facility."

United's continuous improvements in its infrastructure are part of efforts to maintain its position in a competitive market. For 2024, United held a domestic market share of 16.0%, following Delta Air Lines (17.8%), American Airlines (17.5%), and Southwest Airlines (17.2%).

At the LAX facility, United can now accommodate current widebody models like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 777 series, with the layout allowing for either two widebodies or up to six narrowbodies. The transition to this larger, more integrated facility aligns with United's broader operational goals.

United's LAX facilities are particularly proficient in handling maintenance of the 787's GEnx-1B engines while also supporting other aircraft models.

Iwelumo concluded, "This facility represents a significant milestone in fortifying our operations and ensuring our ability to deliver world-class service to our customers and partners."

Building on this project, United is continuously refining its operations to address current challenges and maximize efficiency in a post-pandemic environment.
